How soils are shaping our cities today and tomorrow?

Cities are expanding fast; already home to around 55% of the world's population, a figure expected to rise to 68% by 2050. The key to meeting these challenges lies right beneath our feet—soils, the often-overlooked foundation on which they are built. Soils in cities do far more than simply support buildings, roads and other infrastructure; they sustain resilient and green cities. Understanding this connection can enable us to design and build better homes and communities in the future. It also reinforces the One Health approach, which recognises that healthy soils support the health of people, animals, plants and the environment.   World Soil Day  highlights the value of healthy soil and promotes the sustainable management of soil resources. The day urges individuals to consider sustainably managing soil resources and increases public awareness of the significant environmental and economic issues that s oil degradation can lead to.  The World Soil Day was first suggested in 2002 by the  International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS),  and after being officially adopted by the  United Nations General Assembly  in 2013, it took place officially for the first time in 2014. The day looks to address the rising issues with soil management and raise awareness of the value of preserving healthy ecosystems for people, business, and planet.
